Can ChatGPT or Claude Fill Out Tax Forms?
AI can help create files and populate forms. Learn why a tax PDF or spreadsheet can still fail, what to ask for, and how to move from a draft to a reviewed filing.
ChatGPT and Claude can help populate files, including parts of a tax-preparation workflow, when the necessary tools are available. The useful question is whether your session can edit the exact file you have, use the right supporting records, and produce an output you can verify. Creating a file, deciding its tax treatment, and submitting a return are separate jobs.
If you asked an AI assistant to fill a form and received a paragraph of instructions, start by checking the file workflow before assuming the model cannot do it.
What can ChatGPT and Claude do with files?
OpenAI's file documentation describes creating and refining documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and PDFs. It recommends providing source data, the desired format, structure, and review criteria; available previews and tools vary by product surface.
Anthropic's file-creation guide describes editing business files and explicitly includes filling PDF forms. It also explains that a request without a named file format may produce an artifact instead.
Those are documented capabilities, not a guarantee that either assistant will preserve every field, formula, or page in your particular tax template. This guide is a workflow checklist, not a benchmark of the two products. The linked capability descriptions were checked on October 15, 2026.
Why an AI assistant may struggle with your form
| What you have | What can go wrong | What to request |
|---|---|---|
| A PDF with editable fields | A value can land in the wrong field or disappear in the saved copy. | Fill the original fields and reopen the saved output to check them. |
| A flat or scanned PDF | The page may have no fields to populate; an overlay can be misaligned. | Explain whether the output uses fields or an overlay, then render every completed page for inspection. |
| An Excel workpaper | Replacing a formula with a number can make the current total look right while breaking later calculations. | Preserve formulas and formatting; list changed cells and recalculate totals. |
| A government website form | File editing does not by itself give the session access to a website or permission to submit it. | Establish the supported submission workflow separately from preparing the data. |
| A template with missing source records | The assistant may infer a value that should remain unresolved. | Leave unsupported fields unresolved and return a missing-information list. |
Being able to read a PDF is also different from being able to write values back into it. Ask for a completed output file and an explanation of how it was edited.
Give the assistant an explicit file task
Supply the actual blank template and the records needed for the fields you want completed. For an initial experiment, use fictional or appropriately redacted records. Before using actual tax documents, confirm your organization's approved tools and data-handling requirements.
A useful starting prompt is:
Use the attached template and supporting records to prepare a draft workpaper.
Save a separate output file in the original format; preserve the input.
Keep existing formulas and formatting. Do not invent missing values.
For each populated field, list the source document and page or sheet/cell.
Return a list of unresolved fields, conflicting values, and assumptions.
Reopen the saved output and report the checks you performed.
Do not sign or submit anything.
Adapt the checks to the format. For a PDF, inspect saved field values and rendered pages. For a workbook, check formulas, totals, and sheet structure. A screenshot of the expected result is useful context, but it does not replace the original editable template.
Check three things before using the output
- The file. Does the saved copy open? Are values visible in the intended fields? Do formulas still calculate? Are pages, sheets, and required sections present?
- The evidence. Can you trace each material number to a source record? Are missing documents and contradictions explicitly listed? The IRS recordkeeping guidance explains why supporting records matter for amounts reported on a return.
- The tax decisions. Has the responsible preparer checked the entity, tax year, applicable forms, classifications, and unresolved questions? A technically correct edit does not establish those decisions.
